Masterman Chess Team Wins National Title

Students from Masterman Middle School chess team won the national middle school championship title at the Supernationals tournament held in Nashville, Tennessee this past week-end. The title is the highest awarded for their age group in the country. Over 5,000 players from 49 states attended the event. The ”magnificent” seven champions are Alex, Angel, Srisa, Nalin, Shira, Torin and Alejandro. Their coaches were Stephen Shutt, Greg Shahade, Ross Colby and Leteef Street. Alex came in 2nd place and Nalin and Angel tied for 20th place in the individual competition. Also competing for Masterman in the K-9 under 1250 rated section were 5ht graders, Yuva, Hayden, Zachary and Manus. They won 10th place nationally in their division.

Congratulations to all 11 players and coaches for the wonderful job representing our school!

Theater Monologue Competition Winners

Congratulations to Abby L. and Mateo P. 6-2 who won the Interact Theater Monologue Competition. Over 200 students submitted, and they were 2 of the only 14 winners. A staged performance of their monologues will take place on April 7.2013.

Middle and High School Chess Team 1st Place on State Championship

Congratulations to all participants of the Middle and High School chess team, who travel past weekend to Carlisle, PA to compete in the annual State Championship.

They came back home with the team trophy for first place in both K-12 and K-8 open sections. Thank you to Mr. Shutt and Greg Shahade for his work with the team.

US News and World Report recently ranked Masterman School #1 public high school in the state, and #61 nationally. Additionally, the school was ranked #14 nationally in the magnet category. Read the report here.

Congratulations to Middle School Students Nominated for the National Junion Honor Society

18 Middle schoolers from 6th to 8th grade received yesterday the certificate for the National Junior Honor Society. This certificate awarded for the first time in Masterman Middle School is given in recognition of academic achievement, character and hard work.

ANNENBERG SCHOLARS

Congratulations to Masterman juniors Johana and Spencer, recipients of 2012 Leonore Annenberg Scholarships. Just 5 students in the nation are selected to receive this prestigious four-year, all-expense scholarship to any U.S. college or university. Masterman is exceedingly proud of these outstanding students!

Masterman middle-school students win citywide Mathcounts competition

(by Christopher Wlezien) Ten Masterman middle-school students participated in the Philadelphia Mathcounts competition at Temple University on Saturday, February 18. Not only did Masterman take the top four places, but the team also scored very well overall:
  • Srisa Changolkar, 1st
  • Jane Xu, 2nd
  • Rei Chiu, 3rd
  • Alexander Wlezien, 4th
  • Jenny Chan, 9th
  • Kevin Liu, 10th
  • Sukie Chek, 16th
  • Walter Chen, 17th
  • Anni Zhang, 18th
  • Catherine Huang, 40th
The Masterman team of Jane Xu, Alex Wlezien, Kevin Liu and Walter Chen finished as the top team in the city and automatically qualified for the MathCounts State Championships, which will be held in Harrisburg on March 24th. Srisa Changolkar and Rei Chiu, by finishing in the top four individually, will also participate in the State Championships. Congratulations to the entire team!

Current and former members  of the Masterman Chess team participated in  the Amateur East Chess Tournament in Parsippany, NJ over the President’s Day weekend. While at the tournament the team celebrated coach Stephen Shutt’s 70th  birthday and recognized Mr. Shutt’s long career as a teacher and coach including over 20 years at Masterman. Under Mr. Shutt’s leadership the team has won national acclaim and numerous State and National Titles. Among the attendees  were alums Greg Shahade, an international chess master, his sister Jennifer Shahade a two-time women’s champion, Ben Johnson, Stan Ritvan and Leteef Street.
