Dear Parents and Guardians,

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the death of a member of our school community, eighth grader, Andre Shuler who died on March 14, 2013.

A sudden loss like this can have an effect on students. For that reason, we hope that you will listen to your son or daughter as well as discuss with them their feelings and reactions to this tragedy. Sudden death is always painful to understand, and your child may experience signs of stress. These include:

• inability to concentrate

• irritability or increased aggression

• isolation and withdrawal from normal activities and friends

• guilt

• fearfulness and worries

• changes in sleep or appetite

Counselors from the school will be available at the school for several days to talk with students who are experiencing stress. If you have concerns about your child, please call one of the Masterman counselors, Claudia Gard, (215) 299-3640, Heather Marcus, (215) 299-3641 or Gilda Abney at (215) 299-7363.

On behalf of the Masterman community, I am extending our sincere condolences to the family of Andre on this sad occasion. We will continue to inform you of the school's steps in supporting students and their families. College Planning Seminar

The College Planning Seminar for Juniors and their Families will be held on Wednesday, January 30, 2013 from 6:00 - 7:30 in the Masterman auditorium. Guidelines & information regarding the college planning process will be discussed. All juniors and their families are invited to attend.

New Safety Procedures

Dear Parents and Guardians,

In the wake of Sandy Hook and the recent incident at the Bryant School, we have reviewed our safety plan and district safety polices. As a result of the review we are implementing the following changes:

Effective immediately, all grade 5-8 students who have an early dismissal must be picked up by a parent.Please make sure that you have a photo ID to present to the office staff. No students will be released to other than a parent or guardian unless the person is on the emergency contact form and we have verified this arrangement.

All students, in gr. 5-12 must have a note that states the reason for the early dismissal, time, date and signature of a parent or guardian. All early dismissals will be permitted only at the discretion of the principal.

We are scanning all visitors to our building including parents.

This weekend, an intercom system will be installed on the 17th Street door, which will allow us to monitor entrance to the building at times when our School Police Officer is unavailable. Hopefully, it will be operational by Tuesday. Please be patient with us as we work with this new system.

Next week, we will be reviewing safety procedures with students.

I appreciate your understanding of the inconvenience that this extra security may create. We want to do our best to insure your children’s safety.

The Masterman School Directory, published by the HSA, is a great resource for parents and students. It contains contact information for each student, which is invaluable for coordinating transportation, verifying homework and contacting other families in the Masterman community. The directory also contains a school calendar, class rosters, contact information for the staff and other useful information. 

The directory is supported in part by advertisements - If you would like to place an ad in the directory, or can suggest a business that may be interested in doing so, please let us know!
