Words of our President

Dear Masterman Families,

School will open next Monday with the Masterman Home and School Association more determined than ever to help our students and faculty succeed.

As Masterman HSA President, I was in the school this week and had the opportunity to chat with some of our beloved teachers and was inspired by what I heard.

“We will bring our ‘A’ game,” said one Social Studies teacher. “That is the only way we know how to teach.”  Our children will do the same. Now this year, more than ever, we, the parents, will also need to bring our ‘A’ game.

So, parents, here is our Back-to-School Rubric!

1) Join the Masterman Home and School Association

The membership form was mailed home a few weeks ago.  We are asking for membership dues of at least $100 per student.  We understand that many families can only give $10.00 so we need others to give as generously as possible.  Every dollar that you donate is greatly appreciated and will be carefully used. The HSA’s 2013 membership form can be found here:

2) Donate School Supplies!

The Masterman HSA school supply drive to provide teachers and classes with much needed classroom supplies and materials began this summer and will continue throughout the year.  Donations can be dropped off in the main office any time or sent in with your child.  Volunteers will be at the school next Monday to collect donations from the students as they enter the building.  Here is the current list of needed supplies:

·      Dry Erase Markers/Sharpies/Highlighters

·      Facial Tissues/ Hand Sanitizer

·      Glue Sticks/Liquid Glue

·      Manila Folders

·      Paper Clips/Binder Clips/Staplers/Staples

·      Lysol Wipes (or any brand)

·      Scissors

·      Pens/Pencils/Colored Pencils/Erasers

·      Index Cards/Post-Its

·      Copy Paper

Please contact me, Kim Seibert, at seibert@comcast.net with any questions about the supply drive.

Another important donation the school is seeking: keyboards!

Our new music teacher, David Shapiro, is asking for keyboard donations for the music classes.  If you have a keyboard to donate, contact Mr. Shapiro at dashapiro@philasd.org. Donated keyboards, stands and power cords can be left in Room 102.

3) Volunteer at Masterman!

The budget cuts have reduced Masterman staff such that parents are volunteering in the school before, during and after the school day, and we need your help. Please consider taking on a volunteer task. We are using VolunteerSpot, an online volunteer scheduling and reminder tool, to organize parent volunteers for the different roles.  See how you can help by clicking on the VolunteerSpot sign up: http://vols.pt/GFGA78

District policy requires volunteers to have (or to have applied for) security clearances. Clickhere for our FAQs about Security Clearances and Philadelphia School District Policy, including links to instructions on how to apply for clearances.

Contact HSA parent volunteer coordinator Janet Pinkerton if you need help with any of the above. (jepinkerton@gmail.com)

4) Help Raise Money for Masterman

Here are a few easy ways to raise money for Masterman!

1.  Vote for Masterman in the Give with Target contest on Facebook.  We have almost 600 votes which equals almost $600!  The link is on our Masterman Home and School Facebook page.  You can vote weekly until the end of September.

2.  Write a review of our school on GreatSchools.org. (http://www.greatschools.org/school/parentReview.page).  Just 3 reviews gives us a chance to win $5000.

3.  We have created a document with several programs that will reward our school in various ways.  Just sign up and start shopping. Click on the following link for more information.https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ai66OqaMduwfXqKUAg-X-JqctlbarqVCDVUWx4vt1IY/edit?usp=sharing

5) Get Your Student Involved!

After school activities will be fewer due to the budget cuts, but watch for opportunities your student might enjoy. For example, Middle school students can audition for the Middle School Fall 2013 production of Guys & Dolls Jr., co-produced by Masterman & MacGuffin Theatre and based on the book by Book by Abe Burrows & Jo Swerling. Music and Lyrics by Frank Loesser, Musical Direction by John Rea, Choreography and Direction by Liz Fredette

Performances will be held November 15 at 7 PM and November 16 at 1 PM

Audition date is Monday, September 16 from 3:30-5 PM in the auditorium. Call backs will be on Wednesday, September 18 from 3:30-5 PM.  Rehearsals begin Monday, September 23 from 3:30-5 PM; Actors can expect rehearsals to be on Mondays and Wednesdays. There will be several Tuesday rehearsals for particular ensembles.

Contact Parent Volunteer Holly Lentz Kleeman at: hollylentz@kleeman.com for more information.

Please tackle our parent rubric so we too can bring our ‘A’ game to the 2013-2014 school year. Feel free to contact me with any questions about Masterman HSA.

Many thanks to those of you that have already submitted membership dues, dropped off supply donations, volunteered at the school, and spent countless hours working with the Home and School Association.  Your spirit of giving is contagious—I personally am humbled by the generosity of our parents—and you are making our Masterman community stronger than ever.

Sincerely,

Kim Seibert

Masterman Home and School President
