College Signing Day/The Senior Celebration was a big hit with the Class of 2026! One of our counselors, Ms. Marcus, organized the celebration. It started with the "Senior Strut" where the 6th grade lined the second floor hallway and the seniors, wearing their college shirts, strutted by to cheers and high fives! The Class of 2026 then went to the patio for some speeches, college shout outs, food, a photo booth, and time with friends. The counselors hope the seniors know we're so proud of them as they take the next step forward in their educational journey. Please follow this link for photos from the event. Thanks to everyone who pitched in to help, and to the HSA for funding the event! In the spirit of Election day this week, don’t forget to also cast a vote for your SAC representatives. In the spirit of election season, we encourage every community member to participate and cast their vote when the ballot arrives. Your voice shapes the future of Masterman! Students had a local author, Alyssa Reynoso-Morris, share her inspirational story to Spanish classes. At the end of her presentation she donated all her books to the school library! On behalf of the Language Department we want to show our gratitude to the HSA for sponsoring this great opportunity for students. Our auction would not have been the same last weekend without the beautiful performances of some musically talented students.
We lucky enough to hear from: The Masterman Jazz Combo Tre Smith, Alto Sax (8th grade) Eamon Hellyer, Trumpet (8th grade) Yoel Figueroa, Tenor Sax (9th grade) Quintin Harrison, Drums (9th grade) Luca Vitiello, Guitar and Bass (10th grade) The combo will be performing next for a special luncheon at the school district building on May 20th. And the full jazz band played at the All-City Jazz Fest at Cherry Street Pier on April 29. The Masterman Strings Alison Samuel, Violin (10th grade) Julia May, Violin (10th grade) Alison and Julia are a part of a larger group. a string quartet of which the violist and cellist were at NHD States during the auction. That quartet has also played at school district events. Huge thanks to these students and to our indefatigable Ms. Neu, who organized and assisted to make it all possible. THANK YOU to all the bidders, donors, sponsors, volunteers, student performers, and party-goers who contributed to making our annual spring auction and party our most successful fundraiser in years. We are amazed and grateful to share that, thanks to our community’s generosity and energy, the HSA took in over $55,000 in the course of this year’s event. These funds will go directly into our school to support the range of HSA efforts, including extracurriculars, the library, the musical, security, building upgrades, teacher incidentals, classroom books, science lab materials, cultural events, student dances and socials, school-family connections, field trips, special programs and projects, and MORE.
The funds our community provides make it possible for Masterman's amazing staff to go the extra mile and provide the enrichment—academic, cultural, social-emotional, and practical—that all students deserve. (View this short video created by current Masterman senior Joe Faranda highlighting just a few of the many ways our school serves students and the HSA serves our school.) The biggest shout outs go to Craft Hall, the fantastic venue that made it all possible (and profitable), and to Rebecca Malcolm, the HSA board's fundraising chair and auction committee leader, who made it all happen. We are all so fortunate to be part of the Masterman community, and to benefit from our shared dedication to excellence in public schools! I also thought you would want professional pictures with your friends, so please list who you want to be scheduled with at the same time so we can get some nice pictures of you and your people! :) Please reach out to Ms. Aubry ([email protected]) with any questions. They have a Google form to fill out on the Class of 2027 Google Classroom. It is important that they fill this out with you and their contact info because you will be sent the proofs of the images directly. Students are also asked to list the names of friends they want to be scheduled with because we are going to get formal group photos with them as well. We will schedule a makeup day in August for any student who does not like their individual photos, but this will be on a limited basis - so please bring your best looks in May! Lastly, TAC Images will be giving back 15% of the profit made from the purchase of graduation photos back to the Class of 2027 through the HSA. I am really excited to start this new partnership, and please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions! Please ask your student if they filled out the form. Check it out if you happen to be in the neighborhood! (See flyer attached). The featured work is a 35mm film double exposure called "Classroom Joy". Artist statement: I use the unpredictable nature of 35mm double exposure to explore the overlapping layers of identity and environment. In this series, I explore the family that I was born with (my brother) and the family that I choose everyday: my students in my classroom experiencing joy while learning about analog photography. By exposing the same frame of film twice, I aim to move beyond traditional portraiture and into a realm of surrealism where my subjects are physically entwined with the spaces they inhabit, whether it is the vibrant energy of a classroom or the industrial textures of Fishtown. My process is rooted in a balance of intention and chance. While I choose my subjects and backgrounds carefully, the way the light from two different moments merges on the silver halide of the film creates a third, dreamlike reality that I cannot fully control. Through this body of work, I am documenting a sense of "belonging" that is fluid rather than fixed. As an art educator, it is important that students also see me as a practicing artist that is continuing to exhibit my work. I am happy that the district chose a photo I took in photography class with my students to be exhibited.
